Popcorn Weekly News Roundup (18 - 22 Sep)

Keep up with the latest movie news and stay on top of the juiciest rumours heard through the Hollywood grapevine.

Harry Dean Stanton (1926 - 2017)

Legendary American actor Harry Dean Stanton has died aged 91 on Friday, due to natural causes.

With more than 100 film credits to his name, including roles in The Godfather IIAlienThe Green Mile and The Avengers, Stanton had built an extensive career playing lesser-billed characters.

But despite being typecast, he was the subject of the late critic Roger Ebert's "Stanton Walsh Rule" - "No movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad."

He is survived by family. RIP.

"Thor: Ragnarok" Director In Talks For "Akira"

After gestating in the doldrums for years, the long-awaited live-action adaptation of Akira may have found its director.

Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) is reportedly in talks with Warner Bros. to direct the film, which is baed on Katsuhiro Otomo's iconic six-volume manga. He joins a coveted list of directors who have been considered for the project, including Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Jordan Peele (Get Out).

Set in a dystopian, cyberpunk-themed 2019 where crime and government corruption are rampant, Akira follows Shotaro Kaneda, a leader of a biker gang whose childhood friend, Tetsuo Shima, acquires incredible powers after an accident, eventually threatening the city of Tokyo.

"Ferdinand" First Trailer: John Cena Is Built To Fight, Born To Love

From the creators of the Rio and Ice Age series, Ferdinand stars the voice of WWE superstar John Cena as Ferdinand, a peaceful bull who is thrown into the aggressive world of bull-fighting. Determined to escape, he gathers a group of lovable misfit animals to help him.

Joining Cena in his animated adventure is Kate McKinnon, Gina Rodriguez, Gabriel Iglesias, Bobby Cannavale and David Tennant.

Interestingly, Ferdinand will boldly go where no movie has gone before, and open against Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Not the wisest of moves, I would say.

Ferdinand opens in cinemas on 14 December 2017.
